What Is CBG (Cannabigerol)? What Is Known and What Is Not

Cannabigerol (CBG) is often called the “mother cannabinoid”, because its acidic form is the starting compound from which the plant makes the other cannabinoids. In recent years it has appeared on many labels, often accompanied by promises that research does not support.

No health claim has been approved in the EU for CBG. Products containing CBG are not medicines.

Origin

In the plant, cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) is converted by specific enzymes into THCA, CBDA and CBCA. That is why little CBG usually remains in mature hemp, and products rich in CBG require selected varieties or special processes.

CBG and CBD compared

— CBG CBD
Psychoactivity Not reported No
Amount in the mature plant Usually low The main constituent of industrial hemp
Human studies Very few and small Numerous, including an approved medicine
Approved medicines None Epidyolex, only for rare forms of epilepsy

What the research says

  • Most research has been carried out on cells and animals.
  • There is almost no research in humans: for example, a 2024 study (Cuttler et al., Scientific Reports) involving a single dose in healthy adults, which measured subjective ratings in a laboratory. One small, short study does not allow conclusions to be drawn.
  • There are no clinical trials demonstrating effects of CBG on any disease.

How to read the label

As with CBD, what matters are the milligrams of each cannabinoid per volume and the batch certificate of analysis, which must state the measured CBG value. If there is none, the declared amount cannot be verified.

What we actually sell

Hemp oils: strengths from 5% to 50%, full spectrum extract, an analytical report for every batch. The composition is described on the CBD oil page and in the shop. Our products are not medicines, and we do not attribute to them any property of preventing, alleviating or treating disease — in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006.
